# Connect an AI assistant (MCP)

An AI assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT can connect to a LineHQ account over the Model Context Protocol (MCP), then answer questions about the account and make safe changes when you ask. It's free on every plan.

- **Address:** `https://linehq.co.uk/mcp/account`
- **Sign-in:** OAuth. Each person signs in with their own LineHQ login (and their two-factor code, if they use one), and the assistant acts as them, with their role.

## Connecting Claude

In Claude (claude.ai or Claude Desktop): **Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector**, paste the address, then **Connect** and sign in to LineHQ. On a Team or Enterprise plan, an organisation owner adds the connector first; members then press Connect.

## Connecting ChatGPT

Where your ChatGPT plan and workspace allow custom connectors: go to chatgpt.com/plugins, press **+**, choose **Add custom MCP server**, give it a name and the address, choose OAuth, create it as a plugin and install it from your personal plugins. Then mention `@LineHQ` in a chat.

## What it can do

- Read the account: its plan, numbers and how each one answers calls, receptionists, voicemail greetings, business details and what still needs setting up.
- Read calls with their AI summaries, to-dos, job requests and call analytics, when the person connecting allows call data.
- Change how a number answers calls, set a temporary change ("send everything to voicemail until 9am"), choose a voicemail greeting or order a free voiced one, tick off to-dos, update job requests, block or unblock a caller, and report a nuisance caller to the community.
- For owners: update what the AI receptionist knows, add someone outside the account to a number's voicemails, invite a team member, and connect a Zapier "Catch Hook" as a webhook endpoint (with the Integrations add-on).
- Raise a support ticket or send LineHQ feedback.

On the consent screen each person chooses **set up only** or **set up and call data**. They can change what's shared, and disconnect, on the AI assistants page in the LineHQ portal. An owner can also stop members connecting at all.

## What it can't do

It never spends money, buys or releases numbers, creates API keys, sends texts, or deletes anything that can't be undone. The only webhook endpoint it can add is a Zapier catch hook, and it never shows that endpoint's signing secret. It never gets around a plan's limits either: if something needs a different plan or an add-on, it says so and points to the right page in the portal. Those stay with people in the portal.

## MCP or the Public API?

MCP is for a person working with an assistant: each connection belongs to one person and expires if it isn't used. To sync LineHQ with another system in the background, use the [Public API](https://linehq.co.uk/developers/reference) with an API key instead.
