A local phone number can help local SEO indirectly, but it is not a ranking shortcut. Google looks mainly at relevance, distance and prominence for local results. A matching area-code number can still improve trust, call-through rate and contact consistency, which are all useful for a local business.
Does Google rank a business higher because it has a local phone number?
Google does not say that a local area-code number, by itself, is a direct local ranking factor. In its Google Business Profile guidance, Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. It also tells businesses to keep profile details accurate, including their phone number. Accessed 31 July 2026.
That means a Hull, Manchester or London number is not a magic lever. If the business is not relevant to the search, is too far away, has a thin profile, or has weak reviews and links, a local number will not fix that.
Where a local number helps is more practical. It can make the business look reachable in the area it serves. It can keep the same number across Google Business Profile, directories, website pages and invoices. It can also make callers more likely to ring, because the number feels familiar.
What does Google say about local ranking?
Google's own local ranking help page explains three broad factors:
- Relevance: how well a business profile matches what someone searched for.
- Distance: how far the business is from the searcher or the location named in the search.
- Prominence: how well known or trusted the business appears to be, based on signals such as reviews, links, articles and other information across the web.
Phone number choice sits around those factors rather than replacing them. It can support contact accuracy and customer confidence. It does not move your premises closer to the searcher, add missing service information, or replace the need for reviews.
Google's guidelines for representing your business also stress accurate business information. A number that customers can reliably reach is better than a personal mobile that changes when staff leave or a tracked number that is used inconsistently across listings. Accessed 31 July 2026.
Myth vs reality: local numbers and local SEO
| Claim | Reality | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| A local number guarantees better map rankings. | No. Google's public ranking guidance centres on relevance, distance and prominence. | Use a local number for trust, then improve your profile, service pages, reviews and citations. |
| An 0800 or 0333 number hurts local SEO. | Not automatically. Many businesses use national numbers and still rank locally. | Choose the number that fits caller behaviour, and keep it consistent where it appears. |
| Every city page needs a different phone number. | Usually no. Too many numbers can make tracking and consistency harder. | Use separate local numbers only when there is a real operational reason, such as local branches or teams. |
| Call tracking always damages local SEO. | It depends on the setup. Problems start when the wrong number becomes the main public number across citations. | Keep your primary number stable and use tracking carefully, especially on Google Business Profile. |
When can a local phone number help?
A local phone number is most useful when customers care about local presence. Trades, clinics, estate agents, accountants, repair firms and appointment-led businesses often benefit from a familiar 01 or 02 area code. It reassures people that the business understands the area and is not just a remote call centre.
That trust can affect behaviour. A searcher comparing three plumbers may be more comfortable calling the one with a recognisable local number. A clinic patient may prefer a local area code over a mobile number. An estate agency may want each branch to show the branch number people expect.
These are conversion benefits first. They can still matter for SEO because better calls and engagement help the business earn reviews, bookings and repeat searches. Just be careful with the claim. The number supports the wider local presence. It does not do the job alone.
How does NAP consistency affect the phone number decision?
NAP stands for name, address and phone number. Local SEO people talk about NAP because search engines and customers both need to see the same basic contact details in the right places.
For a small business, the main risk is not choosing the wrong number type. It is scattering several different numbers across the web with no clear primary contact route. One number on Google, another on the website, an old mobile in a directory and a previous landline on Facebook can all create confusion.
A local business number can make this easier. It gives you one public number that can forward behind the scenes. Staff can answer on mobiles, but the number customers see stays the same.
Should you use your local number on Google Business Profile?
Use the number that customers should call first. For many local businesses, that means the main local number. If your business has a real local branch, use the number for that branch. If you run a service-area business without a staffed public office, use the number that reaches the person or team responsible for new enquiries.
Do not use a number just because it looks good if nobody answers it. A strong profile with a dead phone line is worse than a plain number that gets picked up. Missed calls quickly become lost work.
If you need reporting, keep your primary number stable and think carefully before swapping numbers in lots of directories. Call tracking can be useful, but it should not leave Google, your website and key citations all telling customers different things.
Which number type is best for local businesses?
| Number type | Best fit | Local SEO angle |
|---|---|---|
| Local 01 or 02 number | Businesses serving one city, town or branch area. | Good for trust and contact consistency in a defined local market. |
| 0333 number | Regional or national businesses that want one standard-rate number. | Useful when you do not want to look tied to one city. |
| 0800 number | Higher-value enquiries where free-to-caller contact may help. | Can work well for lead generation, though it may feel less local. |
| Mobile number | Owner-led businesses at the earliest stage. | Simple, but harder to keep private, consistent and transferable as the business grows. |
If your business mainly serves one place, start with a local number. If you operate across several cities, compare London virtual numbers, Manchester virtual numbers and other area codes only when they match real service areas.
Can a virtual number be used for local SEO?
Yes, provided it is a real business number that customers can call reliably. A virtual number is not a fake number. It is a phone number that routes calls to mobiles, desks, teams or voicemail without needing a physical phone line at one address.
That setup is useful for local businesses because the public number can stay stable while the answering setup changes. You can move premises, change staff mobiles, add a receptionist rule, or forward calls to whoever is available without changing the number on your Google profile and citations.
The key is honesty. Do not create local numbers for areas you do not genuinely serve. Do not make doorway-style location pages around phone numbers. Use the number to help real customers reach the right business.
How should you set up your business number for local visibility?
- Choose the main number customers should call, not a temporary tracking number.
- Add it to your website header, contact page and key landing pages.
- Use the same primary number on Google Business Profile.
- Update major citations and directories so old numbers do not linger.
- Set business hours, voicemail and call forwarding so the number is actually answered.
- Review missed calls regularly, because local visibility is wasted if enquiries do not reach you.
A business phone number should make the customer journey cleaner. It should not add another layer of admin.
So, should you choose a local number for SEO?
Choose a local number if local trust matters to your callers, your service area is clear, and you can keep the number consistent across your main listings. Do not choose one because someone promised it would push you up the map pack on its own.
For many small UK businesses, the best setup is a local number on the public profile, with call forwarding, voicemail-to-email and sensible routing behind it. That gives customers a familiar number and gives the business a setup it can manage every day.
LineHQ can help you choose and route a local business number without installing a traditional phone system. Start with local business numbers, compare virtual numbers, or set up a business phone number that forwards to the right people.
FAQs
Is a local phone number a Google ranking factor?
Google does not publicly list local phone number type as a direct ranking factor. Its local ranking guidance focuses on relevance, distance and prominence. A local number can still support trust, consistency and call-through behaviour.
Should I use a mobile number or local number on Google Business Profile?
Use the number customers should call first. A mobile can work for a sole trader, but a local business number is usually cleaner once you want privacy, call routing, staff cover or a number that stays with the business.
Can I use different local numbers for different cities?
You can, but only when it reflects how the business really operates. Different branch numbers can make sense. Creating city numbers just to look local in places you do not properly serve is risky and unhelpful.
Does call tracking hurt local SEO?
Call tracking is not automatically harmful. Problems happen when the tracked number replaces your primary contact number across important listings and leaves inconsistent details around the web. Keep the main number stable.
Can a virtual local number forward to my mobile?
Yes. With LineHQ, a local business number can forward to a mobile, desk phone or team route. Customers call the business number, while your personal mobile number stays private.
